The viewer definitely loves films in which the world is in mortal danger: in the hands of alien conquerors, comic book villains, or on the verge of collapse due to our own destructive actions. We watch with unflagging interest the threat of human extinction, destruction and madness. Legendary film theorist Andre Bazin even came up with a definition for this creative drive and the audience’s thirst for widescreen carnage. He called it “Nero complex».
Bazin refers to the legend that the emperor, having learned about the fire in Rome, drove up to a safe distance and watched the “eternal city” burn. They say that at the same time he recited a poem, played the lyre and seemed to enjoy the spectacle. Many historians refute this behavior of Nero, but there are also supporters of the legend who claim that the ruler was even involved in the fire.
And now let’s look at what interesting directors are planning to surprise us on the theme of the apocalypse:
Directors Andy and Lana Wachowski, who directed The Matrix trilogy, returned to the theme of evil alien humanoids with a chic British accent in the new film Jupiter Ascending. This sci-fi spectacle took a huge budget to portray the threat of the apocalypse. The salvation of the Earth and the preservation of balance in the Universe were entrusted to the star Mila Kunis and her savior with elven ears, played by Channing Tatum.
Mad Max: Fury Road
The recent trailer left no one unimpressed. Director George Miller has changed / transformed / rebooted his own acclaimed Mad Max story in a unique manner. A collective hysteria gripped social media when Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the release of a movie called Terminator: May the Savior Come. Director Alan Taylor has decided to reboot the franchise and present the fantastic action movie Terminator Origins, in which we see Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor. The details are kept under wraps, but the plot will not be complete without the time-traveling, gray-haired Arnie.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron
“Avengers” writer and director Joss Whedon will delight us with the continuation of the story that fans of superheroes are eagerly awaiting – “Avengers: Age of Ultron”. This time, a group of disparate superheroes will have to fight against the manic robot Ultron, voiced by James Spader. A powerful enemy plans to wipe out humanity from the face of the planet. We know the Avengers will prevent the apocalypse, but the plot is expected to be extremely gripping and exhilarating.
